From 2010, I photographed this building, the men – and their extended families – on several occasions, until the 1930s structure was finally demolished in 2016. I have a dozen or so photographs of The Card Players, taken at various times, inspired by the wonderful paintings of Paul Cézanne.
Technically, this was a very difficult series of photographs to shoot. Three 17mm tilt-shift images, each one bracketed (-2, 0, and +2) then merged in Photoshop. It was a bright day but the card players were mostly in shadow. I also had to shoot at a high ISO because the men were constantly moving and shifting position.
